ICONOGRAPHY
The theme of the Pietà or Vesperbild appeared in Germany at the end of the 13th century, reflecting the mysticism of the late Middle Ages. Although the theme does not exist in the Gospels, it was often mentioned in contemporary devotional literature.
Indeed, during the first half of the 14th century, mystical thought and devotional practices changed under the leadership of many religious people, including Heinrich Suso and Saint Bridget. In his writings, Suso emphasized contemplation and meditation in the footsteps of Christ’s martyrdom.
DESCRIPTION
The group presented here, of good quality, bears various influences. On a green terrace, the Virgin is represented seated carrying the body of Christ. Marie wears clothes very influenced by Burgundian fashion. First a heavy veil covering the upper part of the face and adding a humble dignity to its expression. Next, a tight red dress high under the chest. Finally, the drape of the coat with its heavy, broken folds.
Christ tends to regain his horizontal position. It imposes by its size and its revealed humanization. Dressed in the short perizonium, typical of the 15th century, it is surrounded by a crown made up of two intertwined thorny stems, still green.
Its elongated feet and hands are very finely sculpted. The hair as well as the beard, treated in a parallel, delicate and detailed manner, offer pretty curls.
The peaceful expression of the faces, both that of Christ and the Virgin, is assimilated to the beauty and nobility of the Pieta of Eastern France.
