Description

This very beautiful set of four Mazarine chairs is linked to a new seating formula appeared in France in the 17th century. It is developed in its last decades.

The particular proportions of these chairs are characteristic of the Chauffeuse : low chair without arms. Placed near the fireplace, the low seat placed the occupant at the fireplace level and the high arched backrest shielded him from drafts.

The vegetal decoration triumphs over the curvature of the lines and creates continuity between the different elements. The base, the crosspieces and H-shaped struts are molded and carved with flowering branches. The foliage front uprights continue in wide flared feet, carved with leaves responding to openwork volutes, alive and sinuous.

A happy harmony is established between the walnut wood and the color of the original red silk velvet fabric, edged with golden braid.
